Interesting question.

Emirates had very good intelligence as to what was coming, and within a few days either side, a pretty good idea as to when, when it came to US intervention in the ISIS contested areas of Iraq.

Qantas and Emirates are in a partnership, but while the latter announced it would stop flying over Iraq on July 28 for safety reasons, the former didn't do anything. 

To be fair, no official restriction was made before August 8 by the FAA (for instance). 

I won't judge this matter as I don't have enough data. What remains clear though is that the downing of MH17 will have a long lasting echo in the industry.
