For the first time, DXB has reached the top spot when it comes to international passenger traffic, outranking LHR. For perspective, it only had around 12 million passenger movements in 2000 (!)
1. DUBAI, AE (DXB) 67 705 335 (+13.9%)
2. LONDON, GB (LHR) 66 823 991 (+3.1%)
3. HONG KONG, HK (HKG) 60 101 897 (+6.5%)
I've been using it as my hub for Asia since January 2010 (I'm flying Emirates) and it sure seems that this airport is never big enough. It's really impressive.
The latest addition, Concourse A, part of Terminal 3, opened in 2013 and increased capacity to 75 million passengers.
Although work on the new Concourse D is under way, there might be a limit of what DXB can do because of the proximity of the city. No wonder Dubai is building a second airport with a projected capacity of …160 million.
(note that by counting all passengers, ATL, PEK, LHR, HND, ORD and LAX are still above in rankings)
